THINKING GLOBALLY!!! Geppetto is deeply committed in helping to make our planet a healthier place. GREEN POWER!  So, “Kids City” was definitely one of those projects very dear to our hearts! Made with loving care by skilled Geppetto artisans, MOTHER EARTH’s seas and land masses gradually took shape... This foam sculpture appeared on the cover of the very popular children’s magazine, Kids City.

The fantastic characters that are given life in the art of  William Arthur Mills...  the quirkey faces...  bizarre hairdos...  surreal moustaches and beards...  have been a Geppetto trademark from the beginning...  From 1984 to 1990, Geppetto fit right in to NYC’s East Village art community in their drafty, old storefront on East 8th Street between Avenues C and D. Will was exhibiting his paintings and ‘cartoon portraits’ at that time, and many of these images later evolved into masks and full-body costumes. It’s easy to recognize how costumes and puppets like Lotta Luv, Mona, Babaji, Darlene Delectable, Swami Gandarvalokananda, and many others, emerged out of combinations of these fresh, highly imaginative drawings...  CLICK HERE  to see and read more about Will’s East Village Years.

MATING SEASON:  Remember the “Cicada Mania” in 2004?  The Mid Atlantic States were invaded with zillions of ‘em--all coming to mate!  The area around Washington, DC, in particular, was swarming with these insects.  The population densities in some areas were estimated at 1.5 million per acre-  that’s a lot of bugs-  and that’s not even including the politicians!!!


Naturally, David Letterman wanted to do a skit about these curiously chorusing, crusty creatures on-the-make!   So, Susan Hum, the “Late Show’s” costume designer gave Geppetto  a call-  requesting a giant, life-like, cicada costume.  What FUN...time to hit the drawing boards!

ATTACK OF  THE GIANT CICADA!!!


“Late Show” writer, Gerry Mulligan, brilliantly played the part of a very handsome, sophisticated, seventeen year old cicada in mating season... either that, or maybe he was just another bug crawling  around town looking for a date.

Next, the eager Geppetto staff needed to set themselves to the task of researching and identifying the correct species of cicada in order to make the costume.  They completed several drawings of the little darlin’, with it’s big shiny orange eyes and beautiful, iridescent wings. Everyone had a great time working on this costume- and Gerry Mulligan is definitely one of the most LOVE-ABLE CICADAS in the whole world!!!

”One of the most bizarre requests we’ve ever had came in one morning from Woody Allen Productions,” laughs Will, “they wanted a big bride and groom on a wedding cake- all carved out of chicken salad!  Yuck! We told them that we didn’t work in that medium.”


“And a few weeks ago,” chuckles Scott, “a man called asking us if we could make a body-bag...  I suggested that he call a morgue!”



“Every job comes with it’s own particular set of construction challenges,” explains Scott, “and that’s how we keep our work fresh and alive.”


“For example, one of the displays we did for F.A.O. Schwarz’s New York City store was extremely successful- and very funny!  The theme was the Broadway musical “Big”, and the store’s designers hired us to fabricate eight 5 foot long, red, high-top sneakers, to be placed along side the escalator, as if they were running up to the mezzanine. The craft behind making them was tremendously challenging, especially because the client wanted the sneakers to be exactly like the real things. The concept was so much fun, and the final affect was quite attractive!”

Both Will and Scott agree that it is the diversity that each project brings to the studio that they enjoy most about Geppetto. Also, they feel deeply grateful for the ever present opportunity they have to help make this world a little more imaginative- and fun!  When asked what was their most fondly regarded project over the years, they are both very quick to point out that there have been many. They seem to have an almost endless repertoire of fascinating people, situations, and events they love to recall in colorful stories.

“Another interesting request came in a few years back from Virgin Airways,” explained Will. “They wanted a 7 foot long carrot for Richard Branson, the airline chairman, to use for a publicity event in New York.”


“Everything had been planned right down to the very last detail, and the end result was quite affective! We very realistically sculpted this enormous, organic looking carrot, complete with leaves attached at the top. It was really a beautiful piece. When it was finished, we attached it by a cord to a long wooden pole. So... on the day of the well-covered press event, Richard Branson pulls up outside the luncheon at the Arcadia Restaurant on East 62nd Street in a horse drawn carriage, dangling a 7 foot long carrot on a stick in front of the horse.”


“The concept was actually rather clever, which publicized Virgin Atlantic’s new frequent flier program for the USA. The carrot idea- a REAL carrot at  that-  has, of course, been used for centuries to motivate horses and mules pulling carts and carriages. The publicity concept hoped to entice more fliers here to fly his airline to London. Quirky jobs like this have helped to keep Geppetto in business all these years.”

Geppetto Studios has a passionate commitment to the health of our environment, so recycling is very important to us. Every scrap of waste polyurethane foam sheeting generated by Geppetto's artisans is collected and carted to various recycling centers to then be manufactured into a myriad of foam products like carpet padding, upholstery, pillow stuffing, packing materials, and much, much more.
