Pearl the Squirrel

Keep an eye out for Pearl, who, with her charming personality and wide spread popularity, is finally giving the city’s most popular rodent it’s due! Bright eyed, bushy tailed, and always eager to spread the word about ecology, Pearl is now making appearances all over New York City’s vast 29,000 acre park system.

“She will be a friendly, accessible ambassador to the children of New York City, helping to make them stewards of our parks and natural areas,” the parks commissioner, Adrian Benepe, said. Pearl’s main job, he added, “is to add to our tool bag for getting kids involved in conservation and the environment and keeping parks clean, and to play the role Smokey the Bear plays for the Forest Service.”

Meet Pearl the Squirrel, New York City Department of Parks and Recreation’s official new mascot, fabricated right here at Geppetto Studios in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Chosen from over some 150 other entries in a contest held by the Parks Department, Pearl was introduced to New York City on April 18, 2010 at an official ceremony in Thomas Jefferson Park at First Avenue at 111th Street.
