ATTACK OF THE GIANT CICADA!!!

MATING  SEASON:  Remember the “Cicada Mania” in 2004? The Mid Atlantic States were invaded with zillions of ‘em-  all coming to mate! The area around Washington, DC, in particular, was swarming with these insects. The population densities in some areas were estimated at 1.5 million per acre-  that’s a lot of bugs-  and that’s not even including the politicians!

Naturally, David Letterman wanted to do a skit about these curiously chorusing, crusty creatures on-the-make!  So, Susan Hum, the “Late Show’s” costume designer gave Geppetto a call-  requesting a giant, life-like, cicada costume. What FUN-  time to hit the drawing boards!

So, the Geppetto artisans eagerly set themselves to the task of researching and identifying the correct cicada species in order to make the costume. They did several drawings of the little darlins’, with their big shiny orange eyes and beautiful iridescent wings. Everyone involved  had a great time with this costume-   and Gerry Mulligan is definitely one of the most LOVE-ABLE CICADAS in the whole world!!!

Attack of the Giant Cicada!!!  Read how “Late Show” with David Letterman writer, Gerry Mulligan, played the part of a very convincing-- and sophisticated, seventeen year old cicada in mating season!
